The Commission is led by a Steering Committee, which coordinates the activities of four Technical Committees as well as the contributions made by regional representatives. This organisation structure is constanlty being reviewed and when deemed necessary is revised on an annual basis, as additional countries with active geochemical mapping programmes or an interest in establishing such programmes become members.
According to the IUGS bylaws any changes with respect to the Steering Committee must be approved by the IUGS Council, which meets every four years on the occasion of the International Geological Congress. Therefore, the new structure of the Steering Committee will come into effect in 2020 at the 36th International Geological Congress in Delhni, India.
